Here, in Lumban Dito sa Lumban

Editorial, identity, poster design

“Dito sa Lumban (trans. Here, in Lumban)” is a conceptual exhibition focusing on the hand-embroidery work of the town of Lumban in Laguna province of the Philippines. Known as the “Embroidery Capital of the Philippines,” local artisans are known for their fine hand-embroidery (or “burda” in Tagalog) work on Piña (pineapple fiber) and Jusi textiles. Referencing these cultural points, I designed an exhibition identity that concentrates on the intricacies of the practice, particularly the materiality and process.

The design features a prominent gray-scale color scheme to call back to the traditional off-white/white palette of the embroidering. The type is a reference to the romantic and intricate nature of the embroidery, with the heading using a script typeface. Concentrating on the lace images, the proofs of concept also feature repeated rectangular shapes to simulate a frame.
